What to Expect:
You’ve successfully completed your undergraduate degree and have
been accepted into graduate school – now what? This section of the
planner aims to help you get an idea of the nuts and bolts of grad school
and all that comes with it. The biggest thing to expect is that graduate
school is definitely no walk in the park, BUT the good news is that you can
handle it! If you are willing to work hard, stay motivated, and learn, you will
do wonderfully. Don’t be afraid to ask questions; you are new and you are
not expected to know it all – not now or ever! Everyone is working towards
the same goal and your peers in your cohort will likely end up being some
of your biggest supporters and friends. Take advantage of the different
experiences and knowledge each person brings to the table. And most
importantly, you can expect to make connections that you will carry
with you as you start your career one day. Savor the small moments as
you get to know your professors and peers, as you meet your first client,
and as you experience all the “firsts” of graduate school. These small
moments are the stepping stones that are leading you into your bright
future.
1. Clinical hours and planning
In graduate school, you will complete your ASHA-mandated clinical hours.
The minimum hours needed to graduate are as follows:
Undergraduate
25 hours of guided observation
Graduate
375 hours of direct patient contact
If you have clinical hours from your undergraduate program, they will carry
over and be added to your 375 hours of direct patient contact. If you did not
complete clinical hours in undergraduate, not to worry! Graduate program
clinical directors are fantastic at their job and will make sure you reach your
required hours. If there are clinical areas you’re especially interested in, we
encourage you to make that known to your clinical director and ask for
clients or placements that will help you gain experience in the areas you
are passionate about.
