In this day and age, there’s a lot to navigate in working as an SLP. In this episode, Brooke Richardson speaks about managing some of the big challenges, including unexpected experiences with burnout, imposter syndrome, and how to bring a positive sense of self to your role and those you work with.
Discussion & Reflection Questions
- Are you hoping for the best of both worlds in terms of incorporating SLO work with both adults and children across medical and educational settings? Or are you set in one direction that you intended to follow for now, and hope to transition at some point?
- Have you thought about how you can expand your own SLP community to include more diversity among your peers, be it in terms of age, gender, ethnicity or levels of experience?
- Can you think of ways you can work on building trust in your professional relationships to ultimately help with advocating for yourself, as well as clients or patients, and setting boundaries as and when needed?
- Even if you think you’ll never experience burnout, do you know how to recognize and differentiate your own symptoms of stress, and those of others? Have you explored and tried techniques that
“I would say give yourself as much grace as you can. You’re learning a lot … you are learning about a lot of professional issues that extend far beyond textbooks… You’re going to take these experiences for the rest of your career, and even if you don’t have the best experience in one setting, or with one supervisor, there’s still a lesson to take away from that… Know that learning begins the day that you graduate.” – Brooke Richardson
Brooke Richardson, MS, CCC-SLP
Brooke Richardson, MS, CCC-SLP has been treating adults with complex medical needs in the acute and outpatient settings since 2009. One of Brooke’s greatest professional passions is improving patient outcomes by guiding SLPs in understanding a patient’s comprehensive medical picture when evaluating and treating. Her passion for patient care and for helping fellow SLPs thrive in medical settings– especially acute care– inspired her to establish The Modern MedSLP. Through this online platform, Brooke provides continuing education, resources, mentorship, and a supportive community so that Medical SLPs can have the tools they need to feel confident in their practice. In addition to her online teaching, Brooke has been instrumental in establishing Respiratory Muscle Training (RMT) programs in multiple hospitals and other healthcare settings, and has spoken internationally on RMT. When she’s not teaching or seeing medically-complex patients, you can find Brooke spending quality time with her husband and daughter, drinking coffee, and dreaming of her next travel destination. You just might also catch her behind the camera or playing the piano.

“The stronger an individual is, the stronger a team is. And so, changing the competitive to a collaborative approach also helps, I think, with imposter syndrome”. – Mattie Murrey-Tegels
Mattie Murrey Tegel, MA, CCC-SLP, L, CPC, CLSC
Medical Speech-Language Pathologist and Founder of Fresh SLP
Mattie Murrey-Tegels is the founder and SLP behind Fresh SLP and The Missing Link for SLPs Podcast. She’s been “in-the-trenches” as a medical SLP around the world for over 25 years and now an Assistant Professor for 3 years. She is thrilled to be adding this dream of a podcast because paying her experiences forward is something she is very passionate about. If you ask her patients and students, one thing they will remember is how much she loves her job! She may not look like it but she is a huge introvert and when she is not actively working as an SLP, she is almost always reading, writing (writing over 1,000,000 words a year), or listening to amazing Chicago Blues bands. She also loves being outdoors and definitely enjoys soaking up the sun at her home in Minnesota, where warm and sunny days can be limited. She’s ridden motorcycles for many years, raced sled dogs, hiked huge mountains yet she cherishes the quiet moments of climbing into a hammock to nap or timeless conversations with friends and family.
The Missing Link for SLPs podcast and Fresh SLP is her legacy, giving back to a career that has so richly rewarded her.
