Hey, I’m Ashley! I am a December 2019 Graduate from the College of Saint Rose with a masters in speech-language pathology. Throughout my time in grad school, I was fortunate to have had amazing clinical experiences and true opportunities in each domain under speech language pathology- specifically with students/clients who have significant needs.

I am currently completing my CFY in a school for students with disabilities in my hometown in upstate NY. Here, I focus on implementing motivating and functional approaches to help meet the individualized needs of our students.

When not doing speechie things, you can find me with family and friends, working out, or up at the lake!

Having experienced being a school based SLP from early intervention through to programs for students up to 22 years old, today’s guest, Bridget Karp, now works in a middle school and is loving it! In this episode, Bridget talks with Katie Widestrom-Langraf about her individual and group work with autistic, medically fragile students, and resource classes. She talks about the benefits and challenges of using push-in and pull-out models, what services she provides, what she’s learning more about as she needs to, and challenges around scheduling, student buy-in and managing workload. Bridget and Katie also discuss SLPs provisions of “related services” under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

Today’s guest, Michele Rothstein, always knew that a school based SLP role was for her. Michelle has a passion for autistic students, and works as a “department of one” in an elementary school in Philadelphia. Michelle stresses the importance of caseload management, and speaks about adapting services to meet student needs. She explains how she balances treatment with data collection and record keeping requirements. She also talks about how she prepares parents for the ultimate end goal of their child’s exit from her SLP services, sometimes after years of working with them.
